Terror in Bucksnort: Shockwaves Felt for Miles as Accurate Energetic Systems Plant Erupts
A catastrophic explosion tore through the Accurate Energetic Systems facility in Bucksnort, Tennessee, early Friday morning, leaving at least 19 employees unaccounted for and sending local residents into panic. Authorities are warning that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue amid fears of secondary blasts.
The blast occurred around 7:50 a.m. local time, coinciding with a regular shift change, which may have spared additional lives. Still, eyewitnesses reported feeling the shockwave miles away, with windows rattling, houses shaking, and residents describing the scene as if they were “at war.” Hickman County Sheriff Jason Craft told reporters, “We’re at the beginning stages of all of this … keep everyone in your prayers as we go through this over the next few days.”
A Facility Built for Destruction
Accurate Energetic Systems, founded in 1980, specializes in manufacturing high-grade explosives and ammunition for military, aerospace, and commercial use. The sprawling 1,300-acre facility contains eight production buildings and a quality control lab where the company tests explosives, including dynamite, claymore mines, and large-caliber shell powder. The plant also conducts daily tests measuring explosive velocity and environmental impact.
The company has long supplied the U.S. military and allied forces with munitions. In 2020, the plant underwent a $9.7 million expansion, adding 80 jobs and acquiring out-of-state businesses, with support from a $601,000 state grant.
Chaos on the Ground
Emergency crews are battling multiple hazards at the scene, including potential secondary explosions. Local authorities have shut down State Route 230, and residents are urged to stay clear of the area. First responders have been cautious about entering the plant due to ongoing detonations, according to Hickman County Advanced EMT David Stewart. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been deployed to assist in the investigation.
Residents near Bucksnort described the scene as terrifying. Beyonica Holt, 15 miles from the plant, said, “I thought we were at war … I was going to die.” Another resident nearly 40 miles away reported, “I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it.” The blast’s magnitude underscores the dangers of housing large-scale explosive operations near populated areas.
A History of Tragedy
This is not the first deadly incident at the site. In April 2014, an explosion at a building operated by Rio Ammunition on the same campus killed one person and injured three others. That facility produced ammunition for law enforcement, the military, and civilian hunting. Officials at the time described the building as “pretty much destroyed.”
Investigations Underway
Authorities expect the investigation to take several days, emphasizing that this is no ordinary industrial accident. Sheriff Chris Davis said, “Right now we’re prioritizing people that are involved, their families, and trying to be very compassionate toward them.” Federal and local authorities are combing the site for clues, while the community braces for the possibility of more fatalities.
The tragedy has left a somber mark on Hickman County, a reminder of the risks inherent in manufacturing explosives. As emergency crews continue their work, families and neighbors remain in shock, praying for the safety of those trapped and for answers about how such a massive disaster could occur.
