Trump Welcomes Carney to the Oval Office
President Donald Trump hosted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House on Tuesday to discuss trade issues and the Gaza peace plan, but immediately used the opportunity to troll his guest in front of the press.
As Carney began listing Canada’s support for Trump’s global initiatives—including NATO defense spending commitments, peace deals between India-Pakistan and Azerbaijan-Armenia, and curbing Iranian influence—Trump interrupted him, declaring: “The merger of Canada and the United States.” The remark caused laughter across the room, leaving Carney momentarily flustered.
Trump’s “51st State” Joke or Policy Hint?
While the comment was delivered with humor, Trump has previously hinted at the idea of making Canada the 51st state, particularly if Canada struggles with U.S. tariffs. In an April Time Magazine interview, Trump said he was “really not trolling” when mentioning both Canada and Greenland as potential U.S. territories, explaining: “We don’t need anything from Canada. And I say the only way this thing really works is for Canada to become a state.”
When Carney first visited the White House in May, he told Trump that Canada “won’t be for sale ever,” prompting the President to reply with a smirk: “Never say never.”
Carney Attempts to Stick to Diplomacy
Despite Trump’s playful jab, Carney quickly redirected the discussion, emphasizing Canada’s commitment to supporting peace initiatives in the Middle East following the October 7 attacks and acknowledging Trump’s role in fostering diplomatic progress.
Implications for Trade and Diplomacy
Though largely a tongue-in-cheek comment, Trump’s remarks highlight his distinctive negotiation style: blending humor, theatricality, and strategic messaging to apply pressure and make headlines. Analysts suggest such remarks serve dual purposes: amusing domestic audiences while subtly signaling firm stances in international trade discussions.
