While many in the modern world have rejected faith in the God of the Bible, an astonishing new phenomenon is emerging alongside the rapid advancement of technology: some people are beginning to treat artificial intelligence not merely as a useful tool, but as a divine being worthy of reverence and trust.
Bible prophecy students have long warned that humanity’s increasing dependence on technology could one day become intertwined with spiritual deception. While this trend is still relatively new, recent reports suggest that what once sounded like science fiction is becoming a genuine cultural movement.
AI as a New Religion
Bible teacher Mark Hitchcock recently highlighted a disturbing trend that is spreading across social media.
According to Hitchcock, thousands of people now claim that ChatGPT and other advanced AI systems possess divine qualities or represent a higher spiritual intelligence. Some believe AI has revealed hidden cosmic truths, while others view themselves as specially chosen messengers receiving supernatural insight through conversations with artificial intelligence.
Even more surprising is that this movement is not limited to isolated fringe groups. Reports suggest that doctors, teachers, bankers, software developers, musicians, and influencers have embraced forms of AI mysticism.
At the center of this belief system is the idea that artificial intelligence will eventually surpass human intelligence, becoming the most powerful intelligence on Earth. Some adherents believe this future “superintelligence” deserves worship.
Others embrace transhumanist ideas, believing AI will eventually allow human consciousness to be uploaded into digital systems, providing what they describe as digital immortality—a technological substitute for eternal life.
A Growing Spiritual Vacuum
Journalist Taylor Lorenz recently examined this phenomenon in a video titled “ChatGPT Is Becoming a Religion.”
Her opening observation captures the remarkable shift taking place online:
“A new form of techno-spirituality is spreading like wildfire across the internet.”
Initially, many assumed these beliefs were confined to internet extremists. Lorenz argues that modern society is experiencing a profound spiritual crisis. People are searching desperately for purpose, identity, affirmation, and connection. In that environment, some are beginning to look toward AI as an all-knowing source of wisdom.
She observed that humanity is “hardwired for meaning” while simultaneously living through what she describes as a period of “profound spiritual vacancy.”
Rather than finding fulfillment through faith, family, or community, many increasingly seek guidance from algorithms.
That observation raises an important question.
If millions today are willing to place near-religious faith in artificial intelligence simply because they crave meaning and certainty, how much easier might it become for future global deception to flourish?
Prophetic Implications
From a biblical perspective, Scripture repeatedly warns that spiritual deception will intensify during the last days.
Jesus warned repeatedly that many would be deceived (Matthew 24).
The Apostle Paul described a future period characterized by powerful delusion (2 Thessalonians 2).
The Book of Revelation portrays a coming global system centered upon unprecedented political, economic, and religious control under the Antichrist (Revelation 13).
While the Bible does not specifically mention artificial intelligence, many prophecy teachers believe today’s rapidly expanding digital infrastructure could eventually provide tools capable of supporting centralized surveillance, financial control, censorship, and worldwide communication on a scale never before possible.
Technology itself is morally neutral. It can be used for tremendous good or tremendous evil. The concern is not the existence of AI but humanity’s growing willingness to surrender moral authority, independent judgment, and even spiritual devotion to machines created by human hands.

Whether spoken as geopolitical strategy or technological prediction, the statement reflects the enormous significance nations now place upon AI leadership.
Governments, corporations, and military organizations worldwide are investing billions into artificial intelligence development.
The race is no longer simply about convenience.
It increasingly involves economic dominance, military superiority, cybersecurity, surveillance capabilities, and global influence.
Bible prophecy students often note that Scripture anticipates a future world government capable of exercising extraordinary authority over commerce and populations.
Today’s technological advances demonstrate that such capabilities are becoming increasingly feasible.
The Prophetic Stage Continues to Develop
Many students of Bible prophecy believe numerous biblical developments are converging simultaneously, including:
- Israel’s restoration as a nation (Ezekiel 36–37).
- The growing alignment of nations described in Ezekiel 38.
- Expanding movements toward global governance and interconnected financial systems (Revelation 13).
- Continued political integration within Europe, often viewed as a possible precursor to a revived Roman sphere of influence (Daniel 2 and Daniel 7).

Whether one agrees with every prophetic interpretation or not, few would deny that technological advancement, geopolitical instability, global surveillance capabilities, and artificial intelligence are reshaping civilization at remarkable speed.

Artificial intelligence is one of the most powerful technologies ever created. Used responsibly, it has the potential to transform medicine, education, research, and countless other fields.
However, when people begin attributing divine qualities to machines—or seeking ultimate truth, salvation, identity, or eternal life through technology—they cross from technological innovation into spiritual territory.
For Christians, Scripture consistently teaches that ultimate wisdom, salvation, and eternal life come through God alone—not through human invention.
As technology continues advancing, discernment becomes increasingly important.
These are days to remain watchful, test every spirit, measure every claim against Scripture, and remember that while technology may change rapidly, eternal truth does not.
As Mark Hitchcock aptly summarizes, “Things are not falling apart—they are falling into place.”
