For the first time in two decades, legendary investor Warren Buffett has excluded the Gates Foundation from his annual charitable distribution of Berkshire Hathaway stock, redirecting nearly $6 billion entirely to four foundations tied to his family. The move marks a major shift in one of the world’s largest philanthropic partnerships and comes amid continuing scrutiny surrounding Bill Gates’ past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Buffett Redirects Billions to Family Foundations

Berkshire Hathaway announced that Buffett, now 95, will donate:

  • 9 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation
  • 1 million shares each to the Sherwood Foundation
  • Howard G. Buffett Foundation
  • NoVo Foundation

The combined value of the donation is approximately $6 billion, making it one of the largest annual charitable gifts in history.

For years, the Gates Foundation had received the largest portion of Buffett’s annual Berkshire donations. Since 2006, Buffett has donated more than $47 billion worth of Berkshire stock to the organization founded by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates. This year, however, the foundation received nothing.

Investigation Reportedly Influenced the Decision

The decision follows earlier reports that Buffett had delayed his annual donation while awaiting the results of an independent review examining the Gates Foundation’s historical interactions with Jeffrey Epstein.

According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, Buffett wanted to see the outcome of the review before deciding whether additional donations would continue.

Earlier this year, Buffett acknowledged that he had not spoken with Bill Gates since renewed scrutiny over Gates’ relationship with Epstein emerged.

Although Bill Gates has repeatedly stated that meeting Epstein was a mistake and has denied any involvement in Epstein’s crimes, the controversy has continued to cast a shadow over one of the world’s most influential charitable organizations.

Buffett Accelerates Plan to Give Away Entire Fortune

Alongside the announcement, Buffett revealed an accelerated timetable for disposing of his remaining Berkshire Hathaway holdings.

“My goal is to dispose of all of my Berkshire shares within about eight years,” Buffett said, adding that all remaining shares are expected to be donated by December 31, 2034.

His remaining Berkshire holdings are currently valued at roughly $146 billion, making this one of the largest planned charitable wealth transfers in history.

Rather than directing those future donations to the Gates Foundation, Buffett said responsibility will ultimately rest with his three children through the family’s charitable organizations.

A Historic Break From a Lifetime Commitment

The announcement represents a dramatic departure from Buffett’s 2006 pledge, in which he committed to making annual gifts to the Gates Foundation throughout his lifetime, provided certain conditions were met.

For twenty years, Buffett’s donations helped make the Gates Foundation the world’s largest private charitable organization, funding initiatives focused on global health, disease prevention, education, and poverty reduction.

This year’s omission signals that the longstanding relationship has fundamentally changed.

Why This Story Matters

Buffett’s decision carries significance beyond philanthropy.

As one of the world’s most respected investors and donors, his actions are closely watched across business, charitable, and political circles. Redirecting billions away from one of the world’s largest foundations sends a powerful message about governance, accountability, and public confidence in major nonprofit institutions.

Whether the independent review ultimately changes future decisions remains to be seen, but Buffett has now publicly committed to distributing his remaining fortune through family-directed foundations rather than the Gates Foundation.

Prophetic Perspective

The Bible repeatedly emphasizes wise stewardship, accountability, and integrity in the handling of wealth. Proverbs 11:3 states, “The integrity of the upright guides them.” While charitable giving itself is commendable, Scripture reminds believers that those entrusted with great resources bear an equally great responsibility to manage them transparently and faithfully. As powerful global foundations continue to influence public health, education, and international policy, Christians are encouraged to exercise discernment and evaluate institutions by both their actions and their fruits.
