President Donald Trump is reportedly considering an extraordinary military option for dealing with Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile: sending American forces into Iran to physically secure nuclear material from fortified facilities after diplomacy failed to resolve the nuclear standoff.
The reported concept, described by the New York Post as being discussed by military planners, would be far more complicated than simply bombing another nuclear installation. Ground forces could have to secure nuclear sites, establish defensive perimeters, clear damaged entrances and potential explosives, protect transportation routes, and maintain control of airspace long enough for specialists to recover nuclear material and withdraw safely.
Joseph Rodgers, deputy director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, described such a mission as potentially among the most sophisticated military operations ever attempted.
But an important distinction remains: public reporting about possible operational planning does not mean President Trump has ordered such a raid, and many specific details being discussed publicly have not been independently confirmed by the Pentagon.
What is clear is that the Iranian nuclear question is becoming increasingly difficult to separate from the expanding military confrontation in the Middle East.
From Destroying Nuclear Facilities to Recovering Nuclear Material
Airstrikes can destroy buildings, centrifuges, electrical infrastructure and tunnel entrances. Enriched uranium presents a different problem.
If nuclear material survives an attack—or has been moved before the attack—the United States and its allies must still determine where it is and whether Iran retains access to it.
That is why physically recovering nuclear material would represent an entirely different type of operation.
“I hate to say it, but I think the most likely way to get rid of Iran’s nuclear material, at least what they currently have, is a military operation because the negotiations aren’t going anywhere fast,” Rodgers told the New York Post.
He characterized the potential operation as extraordinarily complex and logistically demanding.
The central challenge would not simply be reaching the nuclear material.
American forces would have to reach it, secure it, handle it safely, transport it through hostile territory, and then withdraw without becoming trapped inside Iran.

The concept reportedly includes forces securing a large perimeter around nuclear installations while engineering and specialized teams gain access to the facilities.
A much smaller group would then undertake the dangerous task of locating, securing and preparing nuclear material for removal.
The newspaper reported that specialized units discussed in connection with such a mission could include elements associated with elite special operations, Ranger forces and Army explosive-ordnance specialists.
Those details should be treated cautiously. Military contingency planning routinely considers different units and capabilities, and discussion of a unit does not establish that it has been assigned a mission.
Even so, the capabilities reportedly under consideration illustrate the magnitude of the problem.
This would potentially require simultaneous expertise in combat operations, engineering, explosive ordnance disposal, nuclear-material handling, transportation, intelligence, air defense and medical support.
Fordo and Isfahan at the Center of the Question
Iran’s underground nuclear infrastructure presents another formidable obstacle.
Fordo was constructed deep underground and designed specifically to survive attack. Isfahan is another major component of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
Damage from previous strikes could paradoxically make a ground operation more difficult. Collapsed entrances, unstable tunnels, destroyed infrastructure and unexploded ordnance could turn access routes into deadly bottlenecks.
American engineering teams might therefore need to clear access while other forces protect them.
Rodgers described the fundamental requirement:
“You need to create a secure perimeter around all of the sites that you’re trying to go in and grab the material from.”
That perimeter would only be the beginning.
Forces would also require a protected transportation route from the nuclear facilities to an extraction point, together with enough control of surrounding airspace to move personnel and sensitive material out of the country.
Iran Has Every Reason to Prepare
Perhaps the greatest obstacle is that Tehran knows its nuclear infrastructure could be targeted.
Former National Security Council official Richard Goldberg noted that the locations are hardly secret.
“There is no element of surprise at the moment,” Goldberg told the Post. “The targets are fixed. We know where they are. The Iranians know where they are.”
That changes the entire battlefield equation.
Rather than surprising an enemy at an unexpected location, U.S. forces could be approaching positions Iranian commanders have had time to prepare specifically for an assault.
Reports have suggested that Iranian defenses around nuclear infrastructure have been strengthened, including concerns about mines, explosives, fortified approaches and security forces positioned around sensitive locations.
Such defenses could dramatically increase the danger of any ground operation.
Pickaxe Mountain Adds Another Complication
Attention has also reportedly turned toward the underground complex commonly referred to as Pickaxe Mountain near Natanz.

A military operation based on incomplete intelligence could seize one cache while another remains hidden elsewhere.
That uncertainty makes the intelligence component just as important as the assault itself.
Getting In May Be Easier Than Getting Out
One of the most dangerous phases could begin after American forces reached their objective.
Goldberg raised precisely that concern.
“So how long can you sustain that and still be able to exfiltrate all of your forces?”
A withdrawal would require protected roads or landing areas, secure communications, air support and sufficient defenses to prevent Iranian forces from cutting off extraction routes.
Iran would not necessarily need to defeat the entire American force.
It could attempt to delay it.
Every additional hour on Iranian territory would increase exposure to missiles, drones, artillery, mines and counterattacks.
The longer the mission lasted, the greater the possibility that a tightly controlled special operation could evolve into a much larger battle.
A Raid Could Trigger a Much Wider War
This is where the reported proposal becomes far more consequential than another attack on Iranian infrastructure.
Sending thousands of American personnel onto Iranian soil would represent a profound escalation.
Iran could respond against U.S. military installations across the Middle East, American allies, shipping routes, or other regional targets.
And the broader geopolitical environment makes escalation even more dangerous.
Russia and China maintain important relationships with Tehran, and Washington is already watching closely for foreign assistance that could strengthen Iran’s military capabilities.
A U.S. ground operation against Iranian nuclear installations would therefore occur against a geopolitical backdrop extending far beyond Iran itself.

Trump Faces an Extraordinary Decision
The reported planning ultimately presents President Trump with several deeply consequential options.
Continue diplomatic pressure.
Attempt further airstrikes.
Contain Iran’s nuclear program through deterrence.
Or potentially authorize American forces to enter Iran and physically secure nuclear material.
Every option carries risk.
But a ground operation would cross a threshold that airstrikes do not: American troops would be deliberately inserted into Iranian territory with the expectation that Iranian forces could attempt to stop them.
The mission might achieve something bombing alone cannot—physical control over identified nuclear material.
It could also ignite a confrontation whose boundaries would be impossible to guarantee beforehand.
For now, reports of contingency planning should not be confused with an operational order.
