China, Russia and India are signaling deeper cooperation as the BRICS bloc works to expand its influence in a rapidly changing global economy. At the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called cooperation the strength of the organization, while Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin backed greater economic coordination and a more multipolar international system.

The summit concluded September 13 after two days of meetings focused on economic cooperation, global trade, energy security, financial coordination, artificial intelligence and reform of international institutions. Putin described BRICS as part of the movement toward a “new, more just, multipolar world order,” while Xi emphasized the importance of international rules and cooperation.

The significance is difficult to miss. BRICS was originally created by Brazil, Russia, India and China before expanding to include additional emerging economies. Its members now represent a substantial portion of the world’s population and economic activity, giving the organization growing influence outside traditional Western-led institutions.

China and India Try to Reset Relations

One of the most important developments was Xi’s return to India for his first visit since 2019. Relations between Beijing and New Delhi have remained tense since the deadly 2020 border confrontation, and their disputed Himalayan frontier remains heavily militarized. But the two governments are now attempting a cautious thaw. Xi and Modi discussed economic and financial cooperation while reaffirming the goal of finding a mutually acceptable solution to their border dispute. For Russia, meanwhile, stronger relationships with China and India provide important economic and diplomatic partnerships as Moscow continues facing Western sanctions and pressure.

BRICS Takes a Position on Gaza and Lebanon

The summit also produced a significant statement on the Middle East. The New Delhi Declaration expressed concern over escalating violence, called for maximum restraint and urged diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. It opposed the forced displacement of Palestinians and reaffirmed support for a two-state solution and Palestinian membership in the United Nations.

BRICS also called for implementation of the Lebanon ceasefire and urged Israel to withdraw from Lebanese territory where its forces remain. Reaching consensus was notable because the expanded bloc includes countries with sharply different positions on the Middle East, including Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

Why This Matters

The bigger story may be economic. BRICS members are pushing for greater cooperation in trade, finance, energy, technology and alternative payment mechanisms while challenging what they view as excessive dependence on Western-dominated institutions. That does not mean BRICS has become a unified political or military alliance. Significant disagreements remain among its members. But the direction is clear: the global economic system is becoming increasingly multipolar.

Bible Prophecy Connection

Scripture describes a future world marked by powerful international forces, shifting alliances and increasing global interconnectedness. Daniel 7 and Revelation 13 describe political and economic systems operating on an extraordinary international scale. BRICS is not identified in Scripture, and there is no biblical basis for claiming that the organization itself fulfills prophecy.

But Christians watching world events can reasonably observe how technology, international finance and multinational cooperation are creating forms of global coordination that previous generations could hardly have imagined. The appropriate response is not fear—but discernment.

What to Watch

Watch whether BRICS can turn its declarations into lasting cooperation in trade, finance, energy, artificial intelligence and cross-border payment systems. The more important question may be whether today’s economic partnerships eventually develop into deeper political coordination. The world is changing—and the balance of global power is changing with it.
