A major diesel spill at a New Jersey data center has raised new questions about the environmental risks accompanying America’s rapidly expanding AI infrastructure.

Thousands of gallons of diesel have spilled from an Equinix data center in Secaucus, New Jersey, flowing into Anderson Creek, a tributary of the Hackensack River.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection estimated approximately 5,000 gallons were released, although officials said it remains unclear exactly how much entered the creek. Cleanup crews have been working to remove the fuel and contaminated water.

Diesel Enters the Meadowlands

The spill originated from a storage tank at Equinix’s NY2 facility on September 11.

Containment barriers were placed across Anderson Creek while vacuum trucks worked to remove the diesel-and-water mixture. Officials said the fuel was contained before reaching the Hackensack River itself.

Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli attributed the incident to what he described as a computer glitch, while Equinix said it was investigating the precise cause.

The incident comes as data centers are rapidly expanding throughout New Jersey and across the nation, driven in part by the explosive demand for artificial intelligence.

Environmental Concerns Grow

The Hackensack River watershed has a long history of industrial contamination, making another fuel release particularly sensitive.

Environmental advocates argue that the incident demonstrates why communities need to carefully consider the infrastructure required to operate massive computing facilities.

Diesel generators and fuel storage are commonly used to provide backup power for data centers. As AI facilities grow larger and require uninterrupted electricity, the amount of supporting infrastructure can grow with them.

The Bigger AI Infrastructure Question

This spill does not prove that data centers are inherently dangerous. Equinix says it responded quickly, notified authorities and brought in environmental contractors for remediation.

But it does demonstrate something important: the AI revolution requires much more than computers.

It requires electricity, generators, fuel tanks, cooling systems, water, land and enormous physical infrastructure.

As the race for AI accelerates, communities will increasingly have to weigh economic development against environmental protection and public safety.

A Prophetic Perspective

Scripture does not specifically mention artificial intelligence or data centers.

But Daniel 12:4 says:

“Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”

The explosive growth of computing, artificial intelligence and interconnected infrastructure illustrates how rapidly human knowledge and technological capability are expanding.

That does not mean every new technology is a fulfillment of prophecy.

But Christians should remain watchful as technology becomes increasingly woven into the systems that power modern society.
