The unusual announcement came during a CNN interview with Jake Tapper while the two were fly fishing in Montana. Newsom was asked directly about the growing field of Democrats considering a White House bid.

“I Wouldn’t Run If She Ran”

Newsom was blunt when Harris’ name came up.

“I wouldn’t run if she ran,” he told Tapper.

When pressed, Newsom explained that he did not want to create a primary battle that would divide overlapping supporters, donors and political networks.

“I wouldn’t do that to her,” Newsom said. He also argued that a Newsom-Harris primary would amount to “mutual assured destruction” and would benefit other candidates.
