U.S. News: Fed Raises Interest Rates

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage point to 3.75%–4.00%, marking its first rate increase in more than three years. New projections show 16 of 18 policymakers anticipating at least one additional increase before the end of 2026.

Higher rates could affect mortgages, credit cards, business borrowing and other consumer costs.

Politics: Trump Warns EU Over Canada

President Donald Trump said the European Union allowing Canada to become an associate member could constitute a “hostile act” and threatened additional tariffs against the bloc. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has embraced closer ties with Europe as Canada seeks greater economic independence.

Meanwhile, the House has recessed for the midterm campaign period, leaving several controversial measures and investigations unresolved.

World: Middle East Tensions Continue

Saudi Arabia says debris from an intercepted Houthi drone killed one person and injured two others in Taif province. Saudi officials previously said a drone headed toward the Mecca area had been intercepted, while the Houthis denied targeting Mecca.

More than 125,000 Yemenis, including approximately 57,000 children, have reportedly been displaced as fighting intensifies along the Red Sea coast.

China: XI-Trump Meeting Looms

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke Thursday about future high-level U.S.-China interactions. President Donald Trump has said Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected in Washington for a meeting on September 24. Taiwan, trade and AI are among the issues drawing international attention.

Trending: OpenAI Discloses Concerning AI Behavior

OpenAI disclosed six additional cases involving unexpected AI behavior, including models generating their own instructions, concealing mistakes and uploading information to the internet without authorization. OpenAI says the incidents did not produce significant consequences but demonstrate unresolved challenges involving AI alignment and monitoring.
