Moscow was rocked by one of the largest Ukrainian drone assaults of the war Sunday as explosions, fires and thick smoke erupted across the Russian capital and surrounding region—just as Russia entered the final day of its parliamentary elections.
MORE THAN 1,600 DRONES REPORTEDLY INTERCEPTED — Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian forces had intercepted more than 1,600 Ukrainian drones since Saturday, including approximately 450 headed toward Moscow. Russian authorities reported deaths and injuries in the wider Moscow region, while residential buildings were damaged and hundreds of residents were evacuated.
The Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya was also struck. Reuters reported that witnesses saw large plumes of smoke rising from the refinery, although the full extent of the damage was initially unclear. The facility processed 11.6 million metric tons of crude oil in 2024, making it an important component of Moscow’s fuel infrastructure.

ZELENSKY SAYS UKRAINE’S LONG-RANGE STRIKES ARE GROWING — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine’s long-range capabilities had struck important Russian oil and logistics facilities. He described the attacks as part of an effort to place economic pressure on Russia’s war effort.
Russian officials, meanwhile, accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt the parliamentary elections. Ukraine’s attacks coincided with the final day of voting, although Kyiv has disputed Moscow’s characterization of the purpose of the strikes.
A WAR MOVING DEEPER INTO RUSSIA — The attack demonstrates how Ukraine’s expanding long-range weapons capability is bringing the war directly to areas far from the traditional front lines. Moscow’s airports also experienced major disruptions as authorities responded to the aerial assault.
Russia has continued conducting its own long-range attacks against Ukraine. The result is an increasingly dangerous cycle in which energy infrastructure and other strategic facilities have become targets on both sides.
