Two F-35 Componets Ended Up In Hong Kong
According to Bloomberg, UPS was transporting a cockpit canopy and weapons-bay door from an Australian military F-35A in late May. The shipment reportedly stopped in South Korea before being routed to Hong Kong.
Two sources told Bloomberg that the Lockheed Martin-supplied components were coated with radar-absorbing material associated with the aircraft’s stealth capabilities. The precise reason for the diversion remains unclear, including whether it was accidental or intentional.
Pentagon Working To Get The Parts Back
The Pentagon and the F-35 Joint Program Office have acknowledged a shipping problem and said they are working with U.S. authorities and industry partners to retrieve the components and investigate what happened. Lockheed Martin has characterized the components as unserviceable and low risk for exploitation.
Importantly, there is no public evidence establishing that Beijing deliberately redirected the shipment. Chinese officials have also said they were not aware of the incident, according to Al Jazeera’s reporting.
