The Drive-Thru Is Changing: McDonald’s is making a massive technology investment that could fundamentally change how customers order their food. The company says its new AI-powered system, Archy, is already taking drive-thru orders in English and Spanish with reported accuracy above 90% at test restaurants.
$8.5 Billion Transformation: McDonald’s plans approximately $8.5 billion in franchisee support through 2036, including about $5 billion through 2030, as part of its NEXT strategy. The investment includes restaurant modernization, technology and deployment of its AI-enabled ArchIQ operating system.
Archy VS. Human Workers: McDonald’s says Archy is intended to improve accuracy and efficiency rather than simply eliminate employees. CFO Ian Borden said the technology could eventually reduce at least 50 labor hours per week at a typical restaurant, while the company says workers can spend more time on hospitality and food preparation.
That raises an obvious question: if a machine can perform dozens of hours of work, what happens to the human jobs those hours once represented?
The First Attempt Failed: McDonald’s previously tested IBM’s automated ordering system at more than 100 restaurants before ending the program in 2024. The company said it wanted to explore voice-ordering technology more broadly.

Prophecy Watch: Revelation 13:16-17 describes a future system involving control over commerce. Scripture does not specifically identify modern AI as that system, but the rapid digitization of commerce raises questions Christians will continue to debate.
