Attorney Ralph Lorigo delivered striking testimony at Sen. Ron Johnson’s September 28, 2026 roundtable on COVID-19 hospital protocols, describing hundreds of families who sought court intervention over treatment decisions.
The Numbers: Lorigo said he represented 212 families across 40 states. According to his testimony, ivermectin was ultimately administered in 72 cases, with three deaths. He said the remaining 140 patients did not receive the drug and all died. Johnson immediately acknowledged that the figures were not from a randomized controlled trial, but said they warranted examination.
The Big Question: Lorigo’s account is powerful testimony, but it cannot by itself establish that ivermectin caused the difference in survival. The patients were not randomly assigned, and factors such as illness severity, timing of treatment, age and other medical conditions could have influenced outcomes.

What The Science Shows: Large randomized studies have produced results that differ from Lorigo’s courtroom experience. The NEJM-published TOGETHER trial found ivermectin did not significantly reduce COVID-19 hospitalization or prolonged emergency observation among high-risk outpatients. The FDA likewise says ivermectin is not authorized or approved for preventing or treating COVID-19.
That does not erase the individual experiences presented at Johnson’s roundtable. It means those experiences and controlled clinical evidence need to be examined separately.
Medical Freedom: Lorigo framed the issue more broadly as a question of patient autonomy and the “right to try.” Johnson’s office says the four-hour roundtable featured 21 panelists and firsthand accounts concerning hospital treatment protocols during the pandemic.
