SEATTLE — A summer evening meant for food, music and families turned into a scene of terror Sunday when gunfire erupted at Seattle Center during the Bite of Seattle festival, leaving three people dead and multiple others wounded—including a 2-year-old boy.
Thousands of people had gathered at the sprawling 74-acre Seattle Center near the Space Needle when shots rang out at approximately 6 p.m. outside the Seattle Center Armory. Crowds scattered. People sought shelter. Witnesses described panic as festivalgoers fled while police officers and paramedics rushed toward the wounded.
Seattle police said investigators initially believed two people had been shooting at each other. One person was taken into custody while another suspected shooter remained outstanding Sunday night.

Another festival attendee, 25-year-old Estan Wakonabo, described people trampling one another as crowds attempted to escape the shooting.
He later reported seeing several victims on the ground, including a body covered by a yellow sheet.

Seattle Fire Department officials initially confirmed two deaths and reported treating five additional people.
