What happens when artificial intelligence advances so rapidly that controlling it requires cooperation among virtually every major nation on Earth? According to billionaire investor Peter Thiel, the answer could theoretically be a one-world government with real enforcement power—but he says that solution could be more dangerous than the problem itself.

Speaking with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner on the MD Meets podcast, Thiel said meaningful worldwide cooperation could theoretically slow AI development, but argued that it would require “a one world government with real teeth, real force.” He immediately added that, from his classical-liberal perspective, such a solution could be “a cure that’s worse than the disease.”
Thiel also dismissed the idea that international conferences and declarations alone could effectively stop AI development. His concern is that if Western nations voluntarily slow down while China continues advancing, the strategic balance could shift toward Beijing.
That concern comes as Washington and Beijing are increasingly discussing AI safety while simultaneously competing for technological dominance.
Thiel Takes Aim At The Vatican
Thiel then turned his criticism toward Pope Leo XIV’s May 2026 encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, which addresses AI and the protection of human dignity.
The Vatican document does call for AI to be “disarmed” from systems of domination, exclusion and war. It also warns about concentrated technological power and calls for stronger accountability and oversight.
Thiel argued that China’s Communist Party would not heed the Pope’s warnings, while Americans might. He therefore characterized the Pope as, in effect, helping the CCP. Thiel explicitly said he was not claiming the Pope was a Communist agent, but used the phrase “useful idiot” to describe what he regarded as the effect of the Pope’s position.
The Global Government Question
Here is where the debate becomes much bigger than Peter Thiel or Pope Leo.
Who should control artificial intelligence if the technology becomes powerful enough to affect national security, economies, warfare and human decision-making?
A single global authority could theoretically create common rules. But concentrated authority would also create an enormous question of accountability: Who controls the controller?
The Vatican itself recognizes this tension, warning that control over platforms, data and computing power can become concentrated among relatively small groups of technological and economic actors.

The Bible’s warning about humanity seeking centralized power reaches back to the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11. Humanity attempted to build a unified system of enormous collective power, declaring that they would make a name for themselves.
The prophetic question isn’t whether today’s AI system is literally the fulfillment of Babel.
It is whether humanity is once again moving toward technological systems capable of concentrating extraordinary power into the hands of a relatively small number of authorities.
Revelation 13 also describes an end-times system involving political authority, economic control and restrictions affecting commerce. We should not claim today’s technology is that system—but the technological ability to create increasingly interconnected systems of identification, commerce and control is something Christians should watch carefully.
