A potentially historic El Niño is strengthening across the Pacific, and NOAA says the odds of a very strong event during the 2026–27 fall and winter are now greater than 90%. For October through December, NOAA puts the chance of an event exceeding the strength of previous El Niños dating back to 1950 at 75%. But what does that mean for American families?
The Winter Weather Pattern Could Change
El Niño occurs when unusually warm water develops across the central and eastern tropical Pacific, altering atmospheric circulation and shifting major storm tracks.
NOAA’s seasonal outlook shows a classic El Niño pattern developing, with increased odds of above-normal temperatures across much of the northern and central United States. The strongest warmth probabilities extend across portions of the Northwest and northern tier.
But warmer temperatures don’t mean a storm-free winter.
California And The South Could Get Wetter
The southern United States is generally favored for wetter conditions during strong El Niño winters. California and parts of the Southwest could see increased precipitation, while the southern Plains, Gulf Coast and Southeast may experience a more active storm pattern.
That could mean beneficial moisture in drought-stricken areas—but also flooding, mudslides, severe thunderstorms and dangerous travel when storms become intense.
A Mild Winter Can Still Be Dangerous
One of the biggest misconceptions about El Niño is that warmer seasonal temperatures eliminate winter threats. They don’t.
A single storm can still produce heavy snow, ice, freezing rain, damaging winds or dangerous cold—even during a winter that averages warmer than normal.
The Great Lakes can also experience significant lake-effect snow when cold air moves over relatively warm, ice-free water.
What Should Families Do Now?
Don’t prepare for one specific forecast. Prepare for disruption.
Keep several days of food and water available, maintain flashlights and backup batteries, have alternative ways to charge essential devices, protect medications and important documents, and keep your vehicle prepared for sudden weather changes.
